“Sometimes you don’t seek out leadership, but leadership follows you.” This powerful reminder from Susan Crane, Town of Brighton Chair, resonated with Leadership Kenosha participants during December’s government panel. Susan shared how opportunities to lead can often emerge unexpectedly, inspiring others to step up when the time is right. Joined by County Board Vice Chair Daniel Gaschke, District 14 Alderperson Kenny Harper, and County Board Supervisor Felix Garcia, the panel shared stories of their leadership journeys and how they make a difference through their role in local government. Each speaker emphasized the importance of local leadership in shaping the community and highlighted the unique challenges and opportunities that come with serving in government. After the panel, participants also had the chance to briefly chat with County Executive Samantha Kerkman, followed by a memorable photo opportunity in her office, further connecting the group with the heart of local leadership.

Following the government panel, nonprofit experts Debra Karp and Jackie Hartley shared their knowledge of how board service drives meaningful change in our communities. Leaning on decades of experience, Debra and Jackie explained how serving on a nonprofit board offers not only an opportunity for personal growth but also a way to create a lasting impact through leadership and collaboration. Participants learned practical steps to engage with boards, offering them the tools and confidence needed to contribute to causes they care about.

To wrap up the day’s session, Leadership Kenosha participants sharpened their skills in navigating tough conversations during "Mastering Conversations for Better Resolution." Kate Walker, VP of Learning and Development at MRA, provided participants with tools to transform conflict into opportunities for growth. Kate’s session emphasized the importance of clear communication and emotional intelligence when addressing conflicts, ensuring participants walked away with practical strategies to handle challenges both professionally and personally.
